Tree of Inspiration - Decorating Kylun's Room 101

So the last couple of days have been pretty laid back, mostly because I have been tackling getting some little things done around the house that I have been looking forward to or been trying to find the time to do. One of those things is I've been waiting for a tree decal to come in that I ordered for Kylun's room. I didn't really do much for his baby room when he was born, mostly because he didn't really have a room all to his own until recently. It was either shared with us or when we were 'kicked' out our clothes and some other things were still stored in his room.

So once we moved I was excited to slowly create a bit of a more kid friendly room environment. Now if I had unlimited resources I probably would've gone nuts with decorating and building his room, however my approach has been creating with what I've got and slowly adding pieces, inexpensive, functional, and DIY to save money and achieve the look I'm going for.

We have always bought black brown inexpensive furniture at IKEA so that we can move furniture around as we wish throughout the house if need or want be and have things become interchangeable. We figure this way if we don't want a piece of furniture in a room any more we can easily move it to another place in the house. Also we can pretty much mix any colour combination with it and make it work.

So my focus for Kylun's room has been all over the map at various points, but I finally found a 'feeling' for his room. I want the room to be airy, warm, creative, functional, have boyish touches with neutral timeless and classic finishes. I love books so a reading corner with space still left for lots of creative play is a must. I also like the idea of separating the space of sleep and dressing from play area. This does not mean different rooms, but more obviously designated areas in the room for different activities. This will evolve I'm sure as he grows and interests start to really take shape.

Does that seem like too much? Let's put it into pictures.

Creative, natural touches.
One of my absolute favourite ideas for bookshelves. So easy too.

Shabby Chic touches with DIY style touch of patchwork.

Boyish accents.

Reading corner for the little avid reader with various patterned pillows to curl up in.

Stacked books for long hours of reading enjoyment while staying in one place. (is that even possible?)

Did I mention reading corner? Love the reading corner sign.

Mini armchair to curl up in.
Baskets for toy storage. Easy to access and clean up.

Rocking mini armchair - so cute.

Pretty much what I'm going for on one side of the room.
So there's my 'feeling' in pictures of what I want. So when I got my decal in the mail I go so excited I had to put it up right away. I also recently bought a second hand mini patchwork rocking armchair. Kylun LOVES it. He climbs onto it and will sit there drinking his bottle, or will take a book with him and sit looking at the pictures or has fun climbing on and off the chair over and over again. It's wonderful to watch.

Also interesting to see him sit in the chair the way Mummy and Daddy like to sit in our big armchair. With our feet hanging off one arm, and back resting on the other. Definitely makes you realize how observant he is of our actions.

I also bought a pretty big collection of Little Golden Books, second hand, which stack up nicely. Add Pete's childhood wooden wagon filled with sentimental stuffies, personal touches with pictures, sock monkey, stacked hat boxes and we're on our way.

I've got a list of things I still want to complete before I can call his room finished such as putting up  rustic or distressed shelves to display wooden cars, old vintage books, and pictures, brown and white patterned window curtains, make an assortment of various patterned pillows, paint some small canvas's with boyish themed images or patterns, and if I ever find one with the perfect price, I'd love a funky, classic, or shabby chic lamp or chandelier.

But for now this is where we're at.

Bed and dress area. Still awaiting a shelf over the dresser with diaper essentials and decor, and pictures beside the window, and of course the window coverings.

The reading corner with the fall tree. Mostly finished. Waiting to put up shelves between the corner and the bedtime chair with boyish decor and books.

The leisure side of the room. awaiting shelves, picture frames, and more decor.

The current bedtime chair (would like to someday change this to a  snugly armchair style.
And there you have it. My current work in progress (which will probably be for a while until I find all the pieces I want, and time to get it done). Have any good creative projects or ideas for me to try or add to this room?
