Creative Relief & Loose Ends
It's almost a week since I last blogged. Gaaah!!!
My goal was to blog at least every couple days when I first started this blog. Well with all the packing and life going on this last week has been a bit harder to get to the computer, and have the time to get writing, and sharing what I've been up to.
Well yesterday I had had enough. I haven't had a lot of time to sew, cook decently, or be creative much the last little while so instead of packing yesterday I took advantage and sewed some. Good thing because I have a pile of projects waiting to be done before I leave (I don't like having piles of unfinished projects sitting if I can help it - I loose my focus if it sits for too long). At least I got through 2 and a half (only because my machine jammed a little and I have my machine oil somewhat packed, and not here with me).
I finally finished the top sheet/blanket for Kylun. A bit back I decided instead of buying crib sheets I would make them as I thought I can spend the same or less than what they sell for in stores and have them look like I want instead of being plain, or spending an arm and a leg for fun printed sheets in store.
So I took it upon myself and built the bottom sheets (I mean sheet as I still have a second to make), and I also made sure I had enough to make a top sheet, but doubled like a receiving blanket for summer. Light enough but also warm enough.
I got the measurements online (by the way it fits a little better if you make the corner cut outs more like 8.5" squares rather than 9"- 9"was a little tight to pull over the mattress) and went to work. Well the top sheet always sat pinned and ready to go, but I never got around to actually completing it.
My goal in the end is to find the perfect print and make an actual full set for his crib that he can grow with until he's grown out of his toddler bed (when he gets there). This was just my first attempt to see that it would work. I bought cheaper fabric (just some flannel) to see if everything would work out alright so that when I finally get to making the actual full set I know what it entails and had my hand at it already. At least this way I can take my time and he has some sheets which he needs anyway.
Here's my (folded) finished product.
Once I finished the sheet, I moved onto my next project which was a little one. I have a bunch of scrap fabric and I have made a bunch of little cloths for Kylun (works well for cleaning up food, puke, or slobber - also good for him to hold and play with). Well I decided I would double up a set to make a wash cloth or dish rag.
It is made of scraps remember, but here it is. I had some black left over from the blanket I made Kylun for his crib. The back was black and the top a black and white checkered print. Again flannel. I haven't used it yet but I imagine it would 'foam' up well with soap for a cloth. (Excuse the lint - it is black after all)
Then I moved onto another project which I wanted to start. While looking through old shirts at his parents, Pete found this one which I had given him when we were dating. The color at the time and print was fun, but has had it's time and time to either donate or recycle. So I'm recycling it because I still like the print. It's fresh and fun.
I took the shirt apart and have made 4 rectangles for the center of place mats. I always wanted to make some but never got around to it for some reason, but since I've been getting into making coasters and what not's for the house slowly, thought this would be a great addition to my collection and would freshen up our table. Think white background for the mats (once completed) set at a table with an old jar filled with fresh cut flowers. Maybe sometime I'll find some green fabric to make a tea cozy to match.
Love the lime green. Fun and fresh.
Then my machine decided to go kaput on me and get stuck. Time to oil the thing. I took a picture of the last project I was working on. A double sided receiving blanket.
One side has a blue zebra print and the other side a dark blue themed star print which you can sort of see in the picture. I need to hunt for my oil and then I can complete it. Hate when I get stopped out of my own will, although it did come at a good time as I needed to make it out of the house anyway for some errands.
Thanks again for reading. Do you have any good home patterns, or ideas to freshen up your home for summer?

Love your inspiration amidst your packing! Motivation for me to get to work on these projects floating around in the back of my brain :)
ReplyDeleteoh Liz... good for your for finishing up half-finished projects. I'm afraid to look in my "half-done" sewing box. The fact that I have a box of projects is bad enough! Now that I'm on bedrest I keep thinking of things I could sew... but since I'm not really into hand-sewing, I guess it's not a very good bedrest project! :) Maybe I'll have to try knitting again?! I tried to start a project once and lost all motivation. It's not really the season for scarves... but maybe warm socks for my freezing basement? hmmm.
